The Outfit
Mark Rylance delivers an exercise in quiet calculation as Leonard Burling, an English tailor in 1956 Chicago whose quiet shop doubles as a laundering drop for the Irish mob. Director Graham Moore confines the entire drama to a solitary three-room atelier, relying on razor-sharp dialogue, spatial geography, and psychological sleight of hand over standard gunfire. Rylance’s restrained gestures mask a labyrinthine mind manipulating ruthless mob bosses and nervous capos caught in a deadly turf war. By swapping chaotic gunfights for cerebral parlor games, the production rewired expectations for modern crime storytelling. It demonstrates how modern period pieces can strip the syndicate thriller down to its purest, tensest theatrical essence.
