Captain Marvel
Framed around a fractured identity rather than a standard linear birth-of-a-hero arc, this 1990s-set adventure works best when leaning into buddy-cop territory alongside a de-aged Samuel L. Jackson. Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck inject enough grunge texture and dry wit to keep the mid-tier pacing brisk, while the mid-movie reveal regarding the Skrulls subverts decades of comic canon to deliver a surprisingly pointed anti-imperialist message. Brie Larson plays Carol with stubborn, guarded bravado, finding genuine grit in the realization that her mentors were her jailers. It comfortably claims the top position here because it treats Carol's journey as an intimate personal reckoning rather than an obligation to future crossover events, retaining emotional cohesion that its successor lacks.
