Synecdoche, New York
Charlie Kaufman’s directorial debut follows theater director Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman), whose failing physical health and dissolving marriage drive him to construct a life-size replica of Manhattan inside a cavernous warehouse. Hoffman imbues Cotard with a visceral, tragic gravity as Kaufman layers doppelgängers, temporal slippages, and escalating domestic misery into an unflinching meditation on mortality. The production swells until art and life become utterly indistinguishable. It remains the darkest modern descendant of 8½, delivering the same disorienting dread of an artist suffocating beneath the sheer weight of his unfinished creation.
