The Conjuring
James Wan crafts a masterclass in atmospheric tension and practical haunted-house mechanics. Rather than leaning purely on cheap shock value, the film establishes suffocating dread inside the Perron farmhouse through roving camera movements, creaking soundscapes, and Lili Taylor’s devastating, increasingly erratic maternal unraveling. When Taylor’s character falls victim to demonic corruption and turns violently against her own daughters, the narrative taps into the exact same nightmarish perversion of parental protection that made Evil Dead Rise so intensely horrifying.
