Coraline
Henry Selick crafts a meticulously textured stop-motion portal fantasy that turns childhood restlessness into tactile gothic wonder. Frustrated by her distracted parents in a dreary apartment, Coraline discovers an alternate realm behind a secret door, governed by a doting yet sinister button-eyed doppelgänger. Selick uses hyper-detailed miniature set design, expressive puppetry, and creeping dread to explore the peril of seductive escapism. Much like Gulliver's Travels, the narrative centers on an outsider stepping into a fantastical, scaled domain where initial wonder gradually curdles into a struggle to escape an oppressive, theatrical kingdom.
