Top 5 Best Movies Like The Expendables 2 (Ranked & Where to Stream)

Renny Harlin directs this high-altitude thriller with sheer vertiginous bravura, kicking off with one of the most agonizing equipment-failure set pieces in Hollywood history. Sylvester Stallone stars as Gabe Walker, a guilt-ridden mountain rescue expert trapped in a deadly cat-and-mouse game against John Lithgow’s psychotic hijackers across the freezing Rocky Mountains. The practical stunts on real dolomite peaks give every slip and grappling-hook brawl terrifying physical weight. Lithgow plays his cultured villain with icy, theatrical malice. Gabe’s resourcefulness under siege channels the same bone-crunching, old-school bravado that anchored his leadership as Barney Ross. If you want peak Stallone trading explosive blows with a ruthless European antagonist, this mirrors the raw, propulsive energy of The Expendables 2.

Jean-François Richet keeps the throttle wide open in this lean, unpretentious survival thriller. Gerard Butler plays commercial pilot Brodie Torrance, who crash-lands a storm-damaged passenger plane onto a lawless Philippine island controlled by ruthless separatists. When the survivors are taken hostage, Torrance must ally with Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter), a stoic former French Foreign Legionnaire facing transport for homicide. Richet shoots the tactical shootouts with clarity and percussive brutality, letting physical exhaustion dictate the rhythm rather than flashy editing. The uneasy mercenary camaraderie and brutal shotgun choreography make this an instant winner for fans searching for movies like The Expendables 2, trading retro nostalgia for modern, blue-collar action heroism.

Sheldon Lettich crafted the definitive showcase for Jean-Claude Van Damme's athletic charisma in this gritty underground tournament flick. Van Damme plays Lyon Gaultier, a French Foreign Legion deserter who smuggles himself into Los Angeles to fight in illicit, high-stakes street brawls to support his deceased brother’s impoverished family. The film succeeds because it treats its brawling subculture with working-class grit, punctuated by bone-shattering roundhouse kicks and unglamorous industrial backdrops. Decades before Van Damme stole the show as the sneering mercenary villain Vilain, this film displayed the physical agility and ferocious screen presence that earned him an invitation to The Expendables 2. It delivers straightforward, crowd-pleasing fisticuffs.

David Twohy strips his sci-fi antihero back to essentials, ditching space-opera sprawl for a tense compound-siege thriller. Vin Diesel returns as the night-vision fugitive, pinned down on a sun-scorched planet populated by venomous predators. Tension ratchets up when two rival mercenary squads touch down to claim his bounty: one group composed of tactical professionals, the other of unstable cutthroats. The dynamic between the squabbling gun-for-hire units crackles with toxic machismo, dry barbs, and escalating paranoia. The heavy-caliber firefights, oversized blades, and military banter directly appeal to anyone craving the squad-level swagger of The Expendables 2. It's a blood-soaked siege where big personalities collide with lethal efficiency.

George Miller and George Ogilvie construct a bizarre, dust-caked vision of post-civilization bartering in Bartertown, presided over by Tina Turner’s imperious Aunty Entity. Mel Gibson's lone wanderer Max Rockatansky is thrust into gladiatorial combat suspended by bungee cords before escaping across barren desert sands. The production design remains astonishingly tactile, utilizing rusted sheet metal, steam-powered engines, and elaborate vehicular carnage that feels dangerous in every single frame. The eccentric roster of ruthless gladiators, oversized weapons, and grand practical vehicle stunts captures the same rowdy spectacle that defined 1980s action excess. It offers the larger-than-life stunt work that paved the way for the nostalgic mayhem celebrated in The Expendables 2.
