Raging Bull
Martin Scorsese’s stark black-and-white character study remains the gold standard for athletic self-destruction. Robert De Niro’s Jake LaMotta is a tempest of sexual jealousy, paranoia, and pulverizing physical force, framed through Michael Chapman’s claustrophobic camerawork and brutal, expressionistic fight sequences. It is less a traditional sports movie than an unsparing post-mortem of violent masculine insecurity, underpinned by Joe Pesci’s grounded counterweight as Jake’s exasperated brother. If you admire the bruising family friction and volatile sibling loyalty in The Fighter, LaMotta’s tragic, sweat-slicked descent hits the exact same raw nerve.
