Paper Moon
Peter Bogdanovich’s black-and-white road comedy follows Moses Pray (Ryan O’Neal), a slick bible salesman peddling personalized scriptures to fresh widows across the dust-choked Kansas plains. His solitary hustle derails when he gets saddled with Addie Loggins (Tatum O'Neal in an Oscar-winning turn), a cigarette-smoking nine-year-old orphan who possesses an even sharper instinct for the scam than he does. Bogdanovich shoots the Depression-era landscape with striking, deep-focus realism, allowing the prickly, dry-humored dynamic between the real-life father and daughter to flourish. Released the exact same year as The Sting, it trades lavish backroom parlors for dusty roadside swindles without sacrificing an ounce of narrative wit or con-artist elegance.
