Top 5 Best TV Shows Like Designated Survivor (Ranked & Where to Stream)

Few series ever revolutionized network television urgency quite like Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran’s real-time juggernaut. Anchored by Kiefer Sutherland’s career-defining performance as CTU agent Jack Bauer, the clock ticks in literal seconds across twenty-four hours of nonstop tactical ambushes, assassination attempts, and mole hunts inside the federal apparatus. Bauer routinely sacrifices his sanity, family, and soul to neutralize cataclysmic threats to the American homeland. If what drew you to Kirkman's tenure was Sutherland’s commanding presence wrestling with massive homeland crises, watching him play a far more lethal operative in this legendary predecessor delivers the raw, unrelenting adrenaline surge fans of Designated Survivor obsess over.

Beau Willimon’s icy DC melodrama strips Washington of all sentimental patriotism, exposing the ruthless mechanics of legislative warfare through the vicious ambitions of Frank and Claire Underwood. Driven by fourth-wall-breaking monologues, calculated blackmail, and tactical media leaks, the series turns congressional whip counts and committee appointments into blood sport. It trades physical explosions for devastating psychological checkmates delivered across mahogany desks. For anyone who found Kirkman's idealistic efforts to reconstruct a broken government fascinating, this series provides the pitch-black mirror image: a predatory insider who deliberately destabilizes executive institutions for personal dominion, offering the sophisticated political chess match central to Designated Survivor.

Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon craft a nerve-shredding exploration of intelligence gathering, operational ethics, and psychological decay through CIA case officer Carrie Mathison. Claire Danes gives a searing, erratic performance tracking potential domestic sleeper agents while fighting internal agency skepticism and her own bipolar disorder. The plotting eschews tidy resolutions in favor of morally fraught drone strikes, clandestine embassy asset extractions, and deep-cover moles burrowed inside Langley. This intense forensic obsession with unraveling hidden terrorist cells while navigating Oval Office oversight mirrors the shadowy FBI investigative thread that made Maggie Q's hunt for the Capitol bombers in Designated Survivor so electric.

Created by Debora Cahn, this razor-sharp international thriller drops seasoned foreign service officer Kate Wyler into the role of US Ambassador to the UK just as an aircraft carrier bombing threatens NATO stability. Keri Russell shines with manic, rumpled energy, navigating venomous bilateral negotiations, intelligence community rivalries, and an unmanageable political marriage to a former ambassador. The dialogue crackles with rapid-fire institutional knowledge and pragmatic cynicism. Viewers will immediately recognize the central dynamic: an unassuming, competence-driven civil servant suddenly thrust into an overwhelming executive leadership vacuum, managing the precise diplomatic minefields and explosive geopolitical stakes that continually tested Kirkman in Designated Survivor.

Taylor Sheridan takes a sledgehammer to tactical espionage, chronicling an elite female-led CIA program designed to embed operatives into the intimate social circles of high-value terrorist financiers. Zoe Saldaña anchors the operational side with bruising authority as station chief Joe, balancing brutal field decisions with political oversight from Washington heavyweights played by Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman. The combat sequences hit with concussive, unsparing realism. It directly channels the black-ops grit and high-level cabinet accountability that fueled Kirkman’s off-the-books covert strikes, making it an essential bridge for viewers craving the visceral paramilitary investigations threaded throughout Designated Survivor.
