Nosferatu the Vampyre
Werner Herzog strips the vampire myth of camp bravado, recasting Count Dracula as an exhausted phantom crushed beneath the weight of immortality. Klaus Kinski portrays the Count with pitiful, aching fragility, haunting Bruno Ganz and Isabelle Adjani amidst painterly backdrops inspired by Caspar David Friedrich. Herzog lingers on the physical rot of Transylvania and the silent terror of canal towns invaded by hordes of gray rats. Rather than playing the predator as an alluring seducer, the film crystallizes the ultimate gothic romance paradox: love as an infection of boundless yearning that demands catastrophic self-sacrifice to shatter an eternal curse.
